  1. Dr. Shannon says:

    Yes. Absolutely.
Vicodin is a depressant in and of itself. It works on brain chemicals to suppress reactions to pain which also suppresses reactions to pleasure as well. Since it has such a psychological effect on people it is alot like marijuana use…once you are used to being on Vicodin or marijuana, the world seems to suck alot more when you are not taking it because your brain is more alert and responsive to every little thing.
Hope this helps! :) Good luck!
Best thing to do is to taper off slowly.

It could do or it could be other things in your life causing depression that got you started taking vicodin too to deal with them.Vicodin probably can do though, especially if its a depressant.Cut down very gradually and if you take any other drugs (prescription or not) be carefull about drug interactions. When I took cocaine it made me very depressed for about a week after. You could go to a drug counsellor or something but anti-depressants gave me horrible side affects, and from what Iv read a lot of people do get the side affects,so be careful with those,or if you do start them get your doc to start you on a really low dose, like 10mg.But yeah, vicodin probably can make you depressed.
It could just be that before your life was centred around taking vicodin, cause you were addicted, and now without it your life feels harder or emptier, cause your gonna have to re-build it after spending so much time focused on the drug.Maybe see if you can get a counsellor or something to talk to.I think I might feel a bit differint since the bad reaction to anti-depressants,but Iv read eventually that wears off and you feel normal again.
You could try some of the herbal stuff, like St Johns Wort, cause theres less side affects with that than chemicals, and apparently its just as effective.

Depression – caused by chemical imbalances of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and other important neurotranmitters in the brain which balance emotions is a serious issue. Psychologists state that depression is a unhealthy state which we ‘can’ work through in order to experience greater levels of happiness. Some who daily experience deep chronic depression may require both prescribed medication along with ‘Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy {M.B.C.T.’) provided by Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapists and there are some who experience chronic-but not deeply chronic depression who work well with M.B.C.T. alone. *Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD along with Psychologists Mark Williams, John Teasdale, and Zindel Segal have authored an Excellent self-help book called: “The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness”. Mindfulness, a simple yet powerful way of paying attention to your most difficult emotions and life experiences, can help you break the cycle of chronic unhappiness once and for all, that you may experience greater levels of happiness. In ‘The Mindful Way through Depression’, it is explained why our usual attempts to “think” our way out of a bad mood or “just snap out of it” leads us deeper into the downward spiral of depression. Through very insightful lessons-drawn from both Mindfulness and Cognitive Therapy – Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD and Psychologists- Mark Williams, John Teasdale, and Zindel Segal demonstrate how to sidestep the negative habits that lead to unhappiness and despair, including self-blame and rumination so you can effectively face life’s challenges with much resilience.

  4. Ashleigh H says:

i don’t think the drug itself can cause depression, but the addiction can, which leads to the person taking more to ease the pain.

  5. Thomas R says:

No REALLY, watch House, just look what Vicodin abuse has done to him

  7. Sometimes when people feel sad, they say they are “depressed.” But depression is more than just feeling sad. It is a medical illness. Someone with “major” depression has most or all of the symptoms listed in the box below nearly every day for 2 weeks or longer. There is also a “minor” form of depression (called dysthymia) where the symptoms are less severe. Dysthymia can be just as serious because it often includes short periods where the you may feel better, which could make you think there isn’t a problem. Both major and minor depression have the same causes and treatment.
